2006 Women’s European Championship – Qualification Tournaments

From 22 to 27 November 2005 the qualification Europe - phase 1 - for the 2005 Women's European Championship in Sweden will take place. The qualification phase 1 will be played in two tournaments with six teams each.

Group 1 will be organised by the Italian Handball Federation (playing venue: Mezzocorona). Group 2 will be organised by the Portuguese Handball Federation (playing venue: Lagos).

The 12 nations playing for qualification for the 2006 Women’s European Championship in Sweden are:

Note: The four best ranked teams of group 1 and the three best ranked teams of group 2 will qualify for the play-off round (qualification phase 2) on 27/28 May and 3/4 June 2006. The draw for this play-off round is planned to be held on 18 December 2005 on the occasion of the 2005 Women's World Championship in Russia.

The teams proceeding to the play-offs are:

From group 1: BUL, ITA, TUR and ISL
From group 2: SVK, POR and LTU

The draw for this play-off round is planned to be held on 18 December 2005 on the occasion of the 2005 Women's World Championship in Russia. More details regarding the draw will be provided accordingly.

The final tournament of the 2006 Women's European Championship in Sweden will be played with 16 teams. NOR (defending champion), DEN, HUN, RUS, GER (ranked 2 to 5 at the EURO 2004 in Hungary) and SWE (organiser) – altogether 6 teams – are already qualified for the Final Tournament in Sweden. The remaining ten places will be decided via the play-off matches in May/June 2006.

Play-off matches
The teams which qualified for the play-off matches via qualification tournaments will meet those teams which have directly qualified for the play-offs of the 2006 Women's European Championship in Sweden (Austria, Belarus, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Fyro Macedonia, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Spain, Slovenia, Ukraine).

The results of the qualification for the 2006 Women’s European Championship will be the basis for the seeding in subsequent competitions.

The 2006 Women’s European Championship in Sweden will take place from 7-17 December 2006.
