Retrolympics: The return of outdoor handball
“Retro” is the trend – but it is not new at all. The magic word plays an increasing role in the fields of music, vogue and media. None of the trendsetters is bothered about the fact that ideas from good old times are only recycled. Far from it: If you serve your own history to your heart’s content you are really hip. The same is valid in the field of sports:
The “Retrolympics“, the World Games of former Olympic disciplines, which take place from 17 to 19 June 2005 in Germany’s Potsdam, show that, in that way, Olympic sports such as outdoor handball which have fallen in oblivion can also be revived.A foundation to promote former Olympic disciplines “Verein zur Förderung ehemaliger olympischer Sportarten e.V.“, acting as organizer, aims at reviving disciplines, which have been enriching the Olympic programme since 1896 but are not longer ranked among the current Olympic summer sports, and at having sports people recall them. Besides disciplines such as stick fencing, obstacle swimming, tug-of-war and crossbow shooting, outdoor handball too has been a part of the programme since the first Retrolympics in 2003 –an interesting show not only for historians on handball.
Let’s talk about history: Berlin 1936 Olympic Games: Outdoor handball, pathfinder and precursor of today’s Olympic indoor handball, figured on the programme. The chronicler wrote: “Seemingly indefatigable forwards of all outdoor handball teams captured the spectators. There were nearly 100,000 who were gazing at the field full of enthusiasm“. At that time, Germany won the gold medal, Austria silver and Switzerland bronze.
“Today in our latitudes, the “veterans“ above all keep this sport alive “, Werner Lehman, co-organizer of the Retrolympics, reports. “Many people still know outdoor handball from their youth and above all in the former GDR this form of handball is still played quite frequently“. Here the organizers do not stick to role models from history unconditionally but wish to convey the enthusiasm experienced in former times: “We do not oblige anybody to enter the field dressed in cotton and grandfather’s shoes“.The organizer is still concerned as to weather there will be enough teams to participate in the forthcoming tournament. Those interested might obtain information participation on the Web Site (unfortunately only in German) at http://www.retrolympics.de or might directly contact the organizer.
