For a long time the International Handball Federation has been trying with energetic help of the IOC to give birth to an Athletes’ Commission. The aim: To create a platform for male and female players where they can articulate, bring forward their problems and needs, and where they are able to represent their vital and legitimate interests – an this at highest level.

Now, the first step is done. After previously contacting the corresponding member federations, male and female players could be found willing to cooperate in the Commission for the good of their teammates. The body, consisting of an almost equal number of men and women, is full of big names:

Dawn Allinger Lewis (USA), Christine Lindemann (GER), Heidi Tjugum (NOR), Sinaida Turtschina (UKR) Chao Zhai (CHN), Ivano Balic (CRO), Lars Christiansen (DEN), Jaume Fort Mauri (ESP), Jae Won Kang (KOR), Staffan Olsson (SWE), Jackson Richardson (FRA)

The athletes, all of world class, are characterized by experience and competence. The IHF is proud to be able to count on the future collaboration of famous handball personalities, such as Jackson Richardson (FRA), who has just recently given his farewell to France’s national team or the highly decorated World Handball Player of the Century, Sinaida Turtschina (UKR).

The newly formed Athletes Commission will meet for the first time from 3 to 6 June 2005 in the candidate city for the Olympic Games 2012 of Madrid.

im rahmen einer solchen kommission wolte man ja schon vor einiger zeit den terminplan angehen. mal sehen, ob's in dieser kommission was produktives gibt.

Constitutional meeting of the Athletes’ Commission held in Spain

The first meeting of the newly established Athletes’ Commission, which took place in Ciudad Real and Madrid over the last weekend, has been widely received as the proof of the IHF’s ongoing commitment to give a voice to the players within the organizational structure of the International Handball Federation.

Already in its constitutional meeting, the Commission made it clear that it will provide an active input to all other existing and future Committees and Commissions. Some of the issues the Athletes’ Commission decided to be involved in are

- establishing an international Players’ Association

- physical and psychological stress for the players (questions of medical support, number of matches, insurance and legal matters)

- playing a proactive role in promoting handball, stars as “ambassadors for handball” in underdeveloped countries, creation of “handball schools”

- fight against doping

As reported, the Commission is composed of active and retired athletes, all of word-class: Dawn Allinger Lewis (USA), Zinayida Turchyna (UKR), Christine Lindemann (GER), Chao Zhai (CHN), Heidi Tjugum (NOR), Jaume Fort Mauri (ESP), Jackson Richardson (FRA), Talant Dujshebaev (ESP). Further members Staffan Olsson (SWE) and Jae-Won Kang (KOR) were unable to attend the meeting due to other obligations.

Elections of the Athletes’ Commission: High turnout of voters

On the occasion of the Women’s World Championship in St Petersburg, for the first time in IHF history the female members of the IHF Athletes’ Commission were elected. The elections took place from 5 to 10 December. The 384 players present in St Petersburg made brisk use of their right to vote and were spoilt for choice between 15 candidates. After evaluation, Beáta Siti (HUN) received the most votes, followed by Heidi Tjugum (NOR), Asa Eriksson (SWE), Dawn Allinger Lewis (USA) and Zhai Chao (CHN). Thus, three old and two new members were elected.

These five ladies will present in the future women’s handball in the Athletes’ Commission. The elections of the male members will take place on the occasion of the 2007 Men’s World Championship in Germany.
